Guide for best practices in online teaching – advice and reference

In French : Guide des bonnes pratiques dans l’enseignement en ligne – conseils et aide-mémoire

This guide was designed by Université Laval and is both a source of advice and reference used to guide one’s thoughts when developing or updating a distance learning course. It presents 54 practices that can be explored at will and provides examples and complementary links for each practice.

Description of guide and access

  • This guide offers an opportunity to share ideas, advice and suggestions for teachers developing online courses and providing support to students..
  • Non-prescriptive, the statements can be used as a source of information and reflection for teachers according to the mode of delivery adopted.
  • Practices are developed and can be used in different contexts, disciplines or levels of teaching.
    • Practices are grouped under eight headings: 1. Overview of the course and its content.  2. General and specific objectives. 3. Evaluation of learning. 4. Teaching and learning activities. 5. Interaction among students. 6. Support methods.  7. Use of technology. 8. Pedagogical resources.

Moving towards best practices in distance tutoring – a free online cours

This course is a free interactive tool created by SOFAD (Société de formation à distance des commissions scolaires du Québec). It aims to increase tutors’ skills in distance support.

Description of course and access

This course is for all involved personnel (tutors, counsellors, administrators, support staff and  others) who wish to improve their skills in distance learning.

  • Il propose différents jalons visant à soutenir l’encadrement à distance à apporter aux étudiants en fonction de leur situation, de leurs besoins d’apprentissage, tout cela en lien avec la réalité du milieu.
  • It suggests benchmarks that aim to assist distance student support depending on the  situation and learning needs of students, all in connection with the conditions of the learning environment.
  • It provides ideas, tools and resources to more efficiently support distant learners, to reflect on their learning practices and to transfer these new ways of doing things into their own milieu.
  • The course can be taken individually or by a team, depending on needs or local professional development practices. Participants can navigate according to their needs, availability and professional development situation

Evaluating Distance Learners: an evaluation process and useful tools

In French : L’évaluation en formation à distance : un processus et des outils à utiliser 

As part of a project on the ongoing improvement of a skills evaluation process in collaborative distance learning, Cégep à distance and the Université de Sherbrooke  (PERFORMA) have developed a FAD (Formation à Distance) evaluation process. The project generated a website providing access to new tools and documents available for use at different steps of the evaluation process.

  • Even though the process and tools were created with distance learning in mind, most of them could be used for regular day-time education!
